Happy Halloween

It was such a fun Halloween today in K-1! In class today, we had a parade and Halloween party. This morning they did a great job with a Halloween write around the room activity with a partner and we also learned the letter "Ll" today in phonics. They had a fun morning! When the kids had lunch and came back for the afternoon, I had so much fun greeting all my kindergarten friends and seeing them all dressed in their adorable Halloween costumes! They all had so much fun parading around the school and participating in some Halloween fun at our classroom party! A HUGE thank you to our wonderful Room Reps that organized and planned such fabulous party and the parents that helped today! THANK YOU! It will be a day my kindergarten friends will always remember! Happy Halloween, everyone and be safe tonight trick-or-treating!

What a Thursday!

It’s been a busy day in K-1! We did a fun Halloween measurement activity using cubes, and the class had such a great time with this hands-on math lesson! They loved sharing their measurements at the end as we compared the different pictures they measured. Everyone did a fantastic job — they’re becoming real measuring experts! We also did a Halloween counting activity, and the students had so much fun in math today!
In science, we are continuing to learn about weather! Today’s topic was wind, which built on our lesson from yesterday. We watched a video about wind and then drew pictures in our science journals showing what we might observe on a windy day. I loved all their detailed drawings — many included leaves blowing through the air, flags waving, and grass bending in different directions. They are having so much fun being little scientists! We also added to our weather journals, where we are tracking the weather throughout the month to look for patterns. I am so proud of all that we are learning each day and love the thoughtful discussions we have about our science topics!
This afternoon, we read a Halloween mini-book together. It was a story made up of sentences that used words containing all the letters we have learned in HMH. The students did an outstanding job reading the book with me, and I am so proud of how much they are all growing as readers! Today we practiced reading each page by “frog hopping” to each word with our reading finger to make sure we read every single one. We also talked about the different types of punctuation we saw on the pages and how we change our voices when we see a question mark or an exclamation point at the end of a sentence. Everyone did such a great job reading their book today! For homework tonight, I asked my kindergarten friends to read the book to two people at home and bring it back signed. They are so excited to read it to you and show off what wonderful beginner readers they are becoming!

All About Wind

Today, I taught another fun science lesson with the class about wind. We watched a video about wind and then they made a pinwheel. They got to try it out on the fan in our classroom to see if it worked and they also got to try it out outside too. When we were out testing our homemade pinwheels, I also brought out some real pinwheels that they got to try as well. They LOVED using the pinwheels to see if it was windy along with seeing the difference between the paper one we made and the "real" pinwheels. Their faces lit up with excitement because they had so much fun trying out their pinwheels in the wind this afternoon! Way to go, K-1!
In math, we finished up Chapter 3 learning about measurement. I gave the class the end of the chapter assessment and they did great! They LOVED this chapter in math and I am so proud of how well they learned all the concepts I taught them.
In reading, we have been using the story Snail and Worm to help us learn many different concepts in reading. We did a brochure activity with it where it helped my kindergarten friends to identify the characters in the story and answer some comprehension queestions. They did such a wonderful job on the brochure on the story and they had fun talking about the story in great detail. Way to go, K-1!
