Wheels On The Bus and so much more!

I read the class a book today called, Pete the Cat-The Wheels on the Bus. The class LOVED reading this story and doing the motions that went along with each page as I read it out loud to them! When I was done reading it, we talked about how the book was different from the song "The Wheels On The Bus" that we all know from pre-school. They did a great job pointing out the differences along with some things that were the same too. Next we made a bus project to go along with it that was a "listen-and-do" activity. It is a project where I give them cut out pieces of construction paper and they listen to my step-by-step directions on how to put it together. I LOVE doing these projects with my kinders because it's fun to see how they all turn out with given the same directions. It is also fun to ask them questions as we make it to see their thought process. They all did AMAZING! They couldn't wait to bring them home today to show you. Here are some pictures of my kinder friends making their school buses today:

In Jolly Phonics we finished the first set of 6 letter sounds. With learning the letter names/sounds for "s, a, t, i, p, and n," they are already beginning to read with blending these known sounds together. It is so exciting. With finishing the first set, we had a Jolly Phonics review day today where we watched a Jolly Phonics movie about the 6 learned sounds and we did a sound sort too. For the sound sort, they had to sort a group of pictures based on the letter sound the word began with. They all did a FANTASTIC job! I was so impressed with how quickly they were able to sort the pictures themselves and how well they did identifying the right sounds! Way to go,  kinder friends!

We also began our Handwriting Without Tears program where we learned how to write the first three numbers the correct way. In this program we use special chalkboards and learn to write them from top to bottom in a specific number formation. We write on the chalkboards using the "wet, dry, try" method. Both classes loved using the little chalkboards and had fun learning how to write the numbers the correct way!

In math, we are learning all about the numbers 1-5 and showing what we learned in our kindergarten math workbooks. They have been doing a great job!

We have been having so much fun in K-1 and K-3! We have only been in school for 10 days and they have learned SO much already! I am so proud of all my kindergarten friends! It's going to be such a fun year!

This week we began Jolly Phonics and both classes have had so much fun learning the first four letter sounds which are S, A, T, and I. With learning each letter we learned the correct letter formation and the sound it makes with the Jolly Phonics letter motion. My kinders have learned all the letter names, sounds and motions very quickly and I am so impressed how well they can recall the right sound and motion when I say a letter name out loud. Ask your son or daughter to show you all the motions and sounds we learned for each of the letters we learned. Way to go, K-1 and K-3! We learned the sounds for:

Letter Ss- like in the words: snake, smile, sand.

Letter Aa- it's the short a sound like in the words: ant, apple, alligator.

Letter Tt- like in the words: tall, turtle, tennis.

Letter Ii- it's the short i sound like in the words igloo, iguana, insect. It's very important that they know the i makes the short letter sound NOT like the i sound in ice cream. That's the long i sound.

With learning the first four sounds, we are now able to read some words that contain all the letter sounds we learned such as at, sat, as, a. Today, we will review all four letters and sounds we learned and I'll show them how to blend the sounds together to begin reading. It is so exciting when you see them blending the sounds to begin to read and you see their face light up when they realize they can read it all on their own!

In math, we are learning all about the numbers 1 and 2. We are learning the correct formation on how to write the numbers from top to bottom along with understanding the quantity of each one. They are having fun in math and showing me all they are they are learning in their math workbooks. Great job, K-1 and K-3!
