In reader's workshop last week, we began studying the genre of nonfiction. Both classes have really enjoyed learning about this genre and how these books are different from fiction books. In class today, I taught them about what a biography is and we read one today about Jane Goodall. The classes LOVED reading this story about Jane and learning about her life as a young child and her dream of working in Africa to live with wild animals and write all about them. To go along with this lesson about biographies, I asked the class to write about what their dream is when they grow up. They had to finish the sentence of I want to........... and draw a picture of themselves doing it in the cloud below on the paper. I asked them to draw a picture, color it with realistic colors and label it. I was BLOWN AWAY with their fabulous writing and amazing detailed pictures! Wow!! I teared up reading them as I showed them all to the class today. I was so impressed with how much they have grown as writers and illustrators and I am so proud of all of them! WOW!!!! Here are some pictures of what they wrote and drew about:

In math we began a new chapter where we are learning about comparing sets of 11 to 20. They did a great job with this math lesson today and I was very impressed with how well they did on the three math workbook pages they worked on independently in their math books. Way to go, K-1 and K-3 friends! My kinder friends are really plugging along in kindergarten and learning so much! They are going to be more than ready for first grade and I couldn't be more proud of them!

Today in class, we did a few St. Patrick's Day activities on the Ipad that focus on the skills we are working on in math and in literacy. One of the activities was practicing how to do addition stories. I was so impressed with how well the classes did on their own at their table spots after I showed them how to do two of them together as a class first. They loved challenge of this math activity today. The second activity we practicing how to spell words on their own. They were given a picture and letter tiles that were all scrambled up. They need to pull the letter tiles down to spell the words correctly on their own. They all did a great job!

In the morning class, we have gym and music for the remainder of our kindergarten day and in the afternoon, we are having a visit from the "Trinity Irish Dancers." My kinders are so excited to see the assembly this afternoon. The morning class is welcome to attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult and they check in with the office first.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone and have a wonderful weekend!

In honor of St. Patrick's Day tomorrow, we made the CUTEST little paper leprechauns. I was so incredibly proud of how well both classes did in listening and following my step-by-step directions to ensure that they followed all the right steps to complete the project. When we finished the leprechauns they were holding them up in the air waving them with the BIGGEST smiles because they were so proud of what they had just accomplished. This was a tough project to put together that had some challenging cutting along the way. They all did a fantastic job and their leprechauns were ADORABLE! Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Yesterday, we had a very "special" guest reader in the afternoon class. My son, Tyler, came to my afternoon class and read them a story called Rhyming Dust Bunnies. It was such a cute story and the room was full of giggles and smiles as he read the story out loud to them. I LOVED seeing the joy he had in reading to my kinders yesterday. Too cute!

Dr. Seuss Week- "Oh, SO MUCH FUN!"

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday last week, we dedicated a whole week of fun to this amazing author where we read a lot of his books and did some fun things to go along with them. My kinder friends are ALL rhyming experts now if they weren't before this week. This has been such a fun week! Their favorite day was "Wacky Wednesday" where they got to come to school dressed a little "wacky." I was dressed so wacky on that day that they thought I was a substitute when they came in. It was so funny! Oh, what a fun week! Thank you, Dr. Seuss for writing such fun stories for all of us to enjoy! Here are some pictures from our fun week:
