Dr. Seuss Week

Yesterday we began our Dr. Seuss week in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. I read The Cat In The Hat on Monday to the class. Afterward, we made Cat In The Hat rhyming hats. Each student got a hat with a word family on it and they had to think of and write down 6 words that fit into that word family. When they were finished, they traced over it with black sharpie and I asked them to color the hat with crayons in an AB pattern. They ALL did a wonderful job! They were so proud of their hats and they all did such a great job thinking of words on their own. Yay, K-1!
Today, I read the class Dr. Seuss' book called One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. They loved identifying all the rhyming words in teh story and we talked about how all Dr. Seuss books are so hard to read because of all the rhyming words he includes in his stories. It's like reading a tongue twister on every page. After I read the book, I had the kids do a math activity where I gave everyone a cup with rainbow fish inside. They needed to group the fish by color, graph how many they had of each color and then they had to answer three questions about the amount of goldfish I gave them. They all did such a great job answering the math questions and graphing the amount of goldfish they had. Wow!
As the kids finished the math activity, I showed them how to do a Dr. Seuss color by number. As they colored in the numbers the right color from the color key, a hidden picture was revealed. They couldn't wait to see what it was. As they colored each number, their faces lit up with excitement. When they were done coloring the numbers specified on the page, they found it was a Cat In The Hat picture. So fun!
In reading this afternoon we have been reading books about what it means to try hard like in the book Jabari Jumps. Today we read a book called The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza). We talked about how this book is a folktale and what a folktale is. We talked about some other folktales they might have read before such as The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf or Stone Soup. I read them the story and after we did a writing activity to go along with it. They first followed my step-by-step directions on how to make the paper red hen that went on the top of the page and on the bottom, I asked them to write about who they like to help and what they do to help them. I asked them to write two complete sentences on their own. Wow! Their projects turned out so very cute and their writing was outstanding! I am so proud of what wonderful writers my kindergarten friends are becoming! WOW!!!
We had a visit today from some Hersey High School students who are in a club called SOS (Service Over Self). They love to do service learning in the commumity and give back. Today they visited several classrooms at Olive and we were so lucky that ours was chosen to be a part of their experience today. Four students visited our classroom and they took a group of 4 or 5 friends in their group where they read a Dr. Seuss book and did a Dr. Seuss activity afterward. The class LOVED their visit and my kindergarteners looked up to the four Seniors like they were rockstars. It was so fun to see the high schoolers reading to my little ones and seeing the joy on their faces today. Here are some pictures from their visit:
It has been a busy two days in K-1 but my little ones are doing wonderful! They are all such hard workers, love learning and are growing so much as learners! It's so exciting to see and I couldn't be more proud of all of them!
