Only 5 days left after today!
It's been a fun Thursday in K-1! Today I read a book to the class from our HMH reading curriculum called Rainbow Stew. This book was about a grandpa who loved to cook with his grandkids. On a rainy day, they harvested vegetables from his garden, cut them up and put them all together to make rainbow stew. It was a very cute story. To go along with it, I had the kids do an activity where they were given a pot picture that had a list on the front of it. I asked them to write 5 things they would like to put in a rainbow stew if they made a pot of it like the grandpa in the story. On the next page, I asked them to draw the vegetables they listed in the blank pot. As they drew the vegetables, I asked them to check it off on the front page to show they included it in their drawing. I was so impressed with their spelling of the items they had listed and their drawings were AMAZING!! WOW!! They all did such a great job on this activity and they loved showing me what they had made!
In math we did an activity where we practiced counting objects by tens and ones and place value. They did great on the activity and I was so proud of how well they got the hang of it by the time they began working on the backside of the page. Way to go, K-1! We also did a math game called "Vegetable Squeeze." It is like Monster Squeeze that we learned earlier in the year except this time, it had numbers 1-50. They LOVED this game. One person was chosen to be it. That person got to go in a secret spot and write down one number between 1-50. Then they came over to the class where the game was laid out on the BIG rug. They got to call on friends to guess what their secret number was they had writtern down. With each guess, they had to move the boy and girl farmer in the direction if the number was greater or less than the secret number. This game was a big hit and it was great practice working with big numbers and identifying if numbers out of order are greater or less than that number.
We did an activity today where I gave them a rainbow mat with words. They spun a paperclip on the spinner and had to read a word that was on that color of the rainbow. When they read the word, they covered it with a chip. When they had read all the words, they were done. They played it once with a partner and once on their own. I was so proud of what wonderful readers they have become!
I am so proud of how much my class has grown as learners and as individuals! They are all doing amazing! I am relishing the last few days with them until they move on from the nest as first graders!
