K-1 and K-3

K-1 and K-3

We have been busy in K-1 and K-3 applying what we learned from Jolly Phonics into doing a lot of reading and writing the past two weeks. We have been doing a lot of activities where my kindergarten friends are filling in the missing beginning sound or middle sound or writing the whole c-v-c word on their own. They have been doing a great job hearing the missing sound, especially those "tricky" digraphs. I told my kindergarten friends that the more they practice reading and writing on their own, the better they will get! Each time they try to read and write more on their own, it will get easier and easier! They have been excited to begin journaling where we do "weekend news" on Mondays. This is where I ask my kindergarten friends to draw a picture, label it and write a sentence or two about something they did over the weekend. I have been very impressed with their detailed pictures and the hard work they are putting into their journal entries! I love all their "brave spelling" and how well they are writing the sight words the correct way when plugging them into their writing. Way to go, K-1 and K-3! I am excited to see all the growth they will make as readers and writers this year!

In math, we are working on numbers 0-20. We are working on writing numbers 0-20, one-to-one counting to 20, showing the numbers 0-20 in ten frames and simple addition 0-20. They love working with math and the challenge this unit has brought to them as learners. We have been using math boxes where they are using math manipulatives to really understand the quantity of the number and the concept of addition by putting two numbers together to get a total.

I began our gingerbread unit in kindergarten last week where we read a new gingerbread story everyday. They LOVE hearing all the stories and talking about how they are similar or different than the other books we read. To go along with all the fun stories we are reading, we are doing gingerbread activities as well that focus on the kindergarten concepts we are learning in class.

We are having so much fun in kindergarten and we are learning more and more "new" things everyday. They are learning SO much and I am SO proud of all of them!
