The Cat In The Hat

This week is Dr. Seuss week in kindergarten. We will be reading one of his wonderful books each day and doing cute activities to go along with them. Today we read, The Cat In The Hat and the class LOVED reading it together and finding all the rhyming words in the story. To go along with it, they made rhyming hats. Each child in the class got a different word family on their hat and I asked them to think of and write 6 words on their hat that fit in that word family. They did an excellent job writing words on their own and I asked them to make sure they were writing "real" words and not "non-sense" words. Next they traced over the words with black marker and colored the stripes in an AB pattern (red and white) like the cat's hat in the story. They cut out the hat glued it on a picture I took of them. They turned out so cute! Last, I paired up the class with a partner and they sat together reading all the words on their hats. I couldn't wait to hang them in the hallway. Great job, K-1!
