Measuring pumpkins, monsters and bats...so much fun!
The highlight of the day today was when my kindegarten friends got to practice measuring with cubes today in math. I printed out a packet for each kindergarten friend that had all sorts of halloween objects of different widths. They had to use their block train of cubes to measure each object and write down how many cubes each object was. They had SO MUCH FUN with measuring today! They all did great practicing this new skill by drawing lines where to begin measuring and where to end. This help them to ensure they were starting their block train at the beginning of the object and measuring the width correctly to the opposite side. I was so proud of them! Way to go, K-1!

5 Little Pumpkins
It was a fun filled day in K-1! All my little owls have been very busy learning letters/sounds, "new" heart words, learning the difference between fact and opinion, measurement in math, and starting our science weather unit in science. Today we finished our fun "Five Little Pumpkins" project we started last Friday and they had so much fun following my step-by-step directions in making their own! We learned the rhyme with the motions and we did the project after. I am SO proud of everything my kindergarten friends are learning! They are growing a lot as learners and I couldn't be more proud of ALL of them!

I Like Myself
Today we read a really cute story called, I Like Myself, that had a wonderful message in it. It was to be proud of the person you are and don't let anyone tell you differently! We are all different on the outside which makes us all special but it's what's inside that's most important. They LOVED the story and we had a good discussion about the book. We made an adorable project that went along with it where they got to draw something they liked about themselves, something the main character in the story liked about herself and what they both liked they had in common. Here are some of my kindergarten friends with their cute projects:
In structured literacy, we have been learning new letters and reviewing the ones we have learned so far. They are doing such a wonderful job decoding and encodinig words all by themeselves. I am so proud of them! In grammar, we are learning about synonyms and antonyms. We watched a short video today that helped us learn it quickly as the tune of it was very catchy! Synonyms are words that have the same meaning and antonyms are words that are opposites. We will continue working on this new conecpt the next few days. Along with all these things, we are continuing to work on identifying characters and the setting in the story along with talking about the events in a story too. In math, we have begun a new chapter learning about measurement. The first couple lessons have focused on the the concept of "longer and shorter." They are doing great learning this new concept!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin
Today, we listened to the read aloud of Spookley The Square PUmpkin. My kindergarten friends loved the story! Next, I gave my kinders bright orange construction paper and I asked them to draw a pumpkin shape with a pencil of any size they wanted. We talked about how pumpkins can be all different shapes and sizes. Then, I did a TLC activity where we used their paper pumpkin to make it into a jack-o-lantern. I taught them how to make grass and they used brown construction paper to make a stem. They did such a great job following my step-by-step directions and turning their own pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns with the left over black and white paper they had left. I LOVED seeing all their finished projects! They turned out amazing! I hung them in the hallway for all of Olive to enjoy for the remainder of the month.
In math, we are continuing to practice ordinal numbers. I am finding this concept is a little "tricky" for them! We will continue to work on it so they can be successfull learning this new math concept. In reading and writing, we are continuing to learn letters and the sounds they make. We have learned quite a few letters and they have added them in their soundbook. With that being said, we have been working on decoding and encoding words that contain the learned sounds. They are all doing great beginning to read and write on their own. I am so proud of the wonderful growth they are making as learners! In literacy, we are continuing to learn about "parts of a book, " different genres (fiction and informational text), nouns and verbs, and structure of a sentence. They are learning that all sentences begin with a capital letter and end with some type of punctuation. They have learned that letters make up words and words make up sentences. We have also discussed the characters in books and the setting. My kindergarteners are doing AMAZING! Way to go, K-1!
