Groundhog Directed Draw

Today in class, we have continued to plug along in our curriculum. In HMH foundational skills, we have been learning digraphs and the kids are learning them so quickly! They are doing such a great job taking what they are learning and plugging it into their reading and writing. I hope you see this wonderful growth when your child sits down with you to read their book bag books. They are so proud of the readers and writers they are becoming and I couldn't be more proud!! Yay, K-!
In the reading portion of HMH, we have been reading many informational texts that focus around the topic of healthy, happy me. We are learning about what it means to keep our bodies healthy and how we can make good choices to support that. They are really enjoying this unit and sharing their connections with each book we read toegther!
In math, we have begun our chapter on addition. The class is LOVING this challenge. Today, I gave them a color by addition activity and they couldn't wait to complete it! They wanted to see the finished picture when they were done adding and coloring all the puzzle pieces. I am so proud of how well they all did with addition today!
In the afternoon today, I did a groundhog directed draw activity with the class where they followed my step-by-step directions to draw their own groundhog on their piece of white paper. When I was done teaching how to draw the groundhog, we colored specific parts of the groundhog specific colors and then I let them finish coloring their drawing how they wanted. Next, we did a writing activity that went with our groundhog where they got to use their imagination and creativity in filling in the answers. They thought the writing piece was so funny and loved filling in fun answers to the groundhog questions. It was such a fun project to do this afternoon and I am so proud of wonderful students they have become! They did such a great job following my directions, coloring the drawings so nicely, and writing words on their own to the groundhog questions. WOW! Way to go, K-1!
Don't forget tomorrow is Global Day of Play so please make sure your child brings a game from home they would like to play with their classmates. It needs to be small enough to fit in their backpack and one they can teach others how to play on their own. Have a great night, everyone!
